Koreans Reveal Their Honest Thoughts About Marriage – And Honestly, Can You Blame Them?

When you first hear of the word “marriage” in the context of South Korea, perhaps several wedding scenes in Korean dramas may come to your mind.

After all, lots of Korean dramas give the impression that marriage is the “end game” for romantic relationships between couples, right?

Most successful dramas have a glamorous wedding scene at the last episode, don’t you think?

Contrary to popular belief, though, it seems like the honest feelings of Koreans about marriage are different in real life.

In fact, less than 40% of 20-44-year olds in Korea are actively dating…

…so if this is how Korea’s dating culture is, just imagine the majority consensus of Koreans about the topic of marriage.

It seems like in the culture in Korea, most people automatically assume that you’re already supposed to be married when you reach a certain age.

Some people like this woman say that they wanted to get married in the past…

…but as time went by, they started saying that because they want to be able to do a lot of things instead, they’re “not going to” get married anymore.

Some people say that usually, family and even acquaintances repeatedly inquire about their civil status. They try not to take it seriously and just think that maybe, their inquiry comes from the heart.

One man mentioned that he has a friend, a woman in her 30s, who says that she feels the pressure to get married.

Even though young people feel the pressure to get married, some people like this woman believe that the reason for the low marriage rate in the country is because of the lack of funds.

In Korea, marriage doesn’t just stop at the wedding ceremony, as couples still “need” to have a child — because of this mindset, some people think that they’re “better off being single” instead.

Another man added conviction to this reason, by saying that he’s already having trouble living by himself, so having a wife and a child may even be harder for him.

In conclusion, because of financial or cultural reasons, people nowadays are pursuing a lifestyle in which they choose to do without marriage and live life on their own terms instead.
